We're back, baby. Today we finally get to see what the squad looks like in action. The opponents, the Memphis Grizzlies, are an excellent measuring stick for what the Pacers are trying to build. In Carlisle's words, the Grizzlies are a "young, veteran team" whose physicality is exactly what the Pacers need to face at this point in the gelling process.
When pressed about what the rotations might look like tonight, Carlisle said "stay tuned." He wouldn't answer whether he plans to split minutes between players competing for open spots or use the "game for you, game for me" method he employed with Jackson and Smith a year ago. Just speculating, but I think we'll see a few DNPs tonight.
At this point in the season, defense is usually ahead of offense, so I expect a somewhat sloppy game with plenty of transition opportunities. Hopefully that plays into the Pacers' hands and allows Tyrese and his new running mates, Bruce Brown and Obi Toppin, to shine.
Memphis will be without superstar Ja Morant for the first 25 games of the regular season as a result of his off-court conduct. We should, however, see the debut of their marquee off-season acquisition, defensive pest extraordinaire Marcus Smart.
Tip-off is at 8:00 PM EDT. Unfortunately, the game will not air on Bally Sports Indiana but will be available through NBA League Pass. I believe League Pass is doing a free trial at the moment, so it might be worth taking advantage of that if you are looking for a way to watch.
