Some cultures use the Gregorian calendar, others a lunar calendar. Personally, I measure time in Pacers basketball. And wouldn't you know it, another lap around the sun begins tonight as the Pacers play their first game of the preseason against the Timberwolves.

Key Storylines

This game is little more than a tune up, so I won't make too much of whatever happens – but there are still a few storylines to keep any eye on:

  • Life without Tyrese: Indiana opens the preseason learning to play without Tyrese Haliburton. Perhaps the most important question of the season will be how well Andrew Nembhard (and TJ McConnell) can run the offense in his place. We'll get our first glimpse of that tonight.
  • The Battle for 5: With Myles Turner now a Buck, Rick Carlisle has a true competition at the 5 between Isaiah Jackson, Jay Huff, James Wiseman and Tony Bradley. Carlisle has said there are no preconceived notions about the starter, so how they perform on the court will directly determine the rotation.
  • Dribble to Pass Ratio: With Haliburton sidelined, look for heavier touches for Pascal Siakam and Bennedict Mathurin. Can they get theirs without bogging down the offense? Can Nembhard?
  • Johnny Furphy: With Ben Sheppard and rookie Kam Jones out that could mean extra looks for Johnny Furphy. His size, hustle and athleticism lend themselves to making him a Carlisle favorite. Let's see if he can put pressure on Walker and Sheppard and force his way into the wing rotation.
  • Habits: Carlisle just signed a multi-year extension. The emphasis will be on re-establishing the Pacers’ tempo/physicality with a new lead guard and a by-committee center rotation. I'm watching to see if the new look Pacers can replicate the winning habits of last year's team.
