Not many players in recent NBA history have been such an enigma as Cap’n Jack. Often praised, often maligned, Stephen Jackson certainly had a lasting impact on the minds of many inside the NBA and out. Tim Duncan once called him the “ultimate teammate.” Rick Carlisle constantly defended his character as being top-notch. Donnie Walsh called him “a great team guy.” It seems like everywhere he went, he made a great impression on those who know him personally.
That is, of course, everywhere that isn’t the Palace of Auburn Hills (and a strip club or two along the way.) As we Pacers fans know, hell as the whole world this side up of a rock knows, Stephen Jackson could be a loose cannon on the court, playing a starring role in the Malice at the Palace. The presence of Ron Artest nearly assured us that something crazy was always lurking around the corner; Jackson’s fiery personality seemed to exacerbate such a possibility.
While the incident left a permanent stain on his reputation, he is still very much deserving of our gratitude. Jackson has been super active outside the sport, founding the Jack 1 Foundation to help feed those in need, establishing the Stephen Jackson Academy for underprivileged youth in Port Arthur, Texas, and spending large chunks of his free time serving his community in various capacities. He was even recognized with the Community Assist Award in 2008, honoring him for his devotion to community outreach.
The Malice at the Palace was nearly 20 years ago (wow!), and after learning some more about him as a good human, I am ready to forgive. He may have caused us heartbreak as fans, but his reputation as the consummate teammate on the court, as well as being a terrific asset off of it, should more than offset a misdoing or two.
For this, I salute you Stephen Jackson. Happy 45th birthday!
